Michael Kabotie (Lomawywesa) was a celebrated Hopi painter, sculptor, silversmith, lecturer, and poet. He was born in Shongopovi, Arizona, and also spent time working in Kansas and New Mexico. His mother, Alice Talayaonema, was an accomplished Hopi basket weaver. His father, Fred Kabotie, was a celebrated artist, curator, and educator in his own right. Michael Kabotie’s art incorporates traditional Hopi imagery and motifs combined with abstract, contemporary elements. The result is a lively dance and music like movement throughout his artwork. This piece is signed and numbered, bottom right.
